Sokoine University of Agriculture

Introduction:

A team of SUA scientists, in collaboration with Norwegian scientists have over the last 14 years been engaged in action research to integrate livestock in a crop farming system that has experienced decline in productivity from the 1980’s when fertiliser subsidies were withdrawn due economic difficulties of the pre-structural adjustment era (1970s).
The results of integration have been very positive and farmers are able to maximize use of animal manure to increase field crop production while lowering demand for industrial fertilizer and act on environmental conservation.

Current Activities Targeting Smallholder Farmers:

  1. Training of farmers on pasture development in Njombe district.
  2. Training of farmers on hands on technologies for harvesting and storage of Hay in Njombe district.
  3. Training of farmers on good animal husbandry in Njombe district.
